Affordable karate lessons?
Hi, I want to enroll my 6 yr old son for Karate classes to build up his confidence, but I can't afford the $200/month that I am told it generally costs...Is that the going rate or are there places that are much less? Does anyone know of a non-profit and/or low cost provider? I'm in North Dade. Thanks!

Check with the community centers in your city. Here in Cooper City, which I know is not close to you, karate is $30 a month for twice weekly lessons.

Thanks for the suggestion, although I live in Unincorporated Dade, and I don't think the County offers karate or a similar program. But, I will look into neighboring cities which may offer it at a non-resident rate (cheaper than a private provider). I'm also thankful for the $30 point of reference; now I know what is a reasonable rate

What a nice benefit for those who live in that area! There is no karate over the summer, so I'll look into it later, but I suspect the location and time won't work for me, but maybe the info will help someone else

Re: Affordable karate lessons?
hi there i am new to the site, but in reading some of the post. I suggest American Cobra Goju Karate, my son attends and the Sensei's are great with the kids.
Although some of these free courses are great, they tend to be a belt crazy....i choose this school because they don't give it away. They also have adult classes you might be able to get a deal.
200.00 a month. that is crazy. but i know how you feel.
hope this works for you!!!!

Re: Affordable karate lessons?
Thanks Karatemom and mdrgator, but Kendall and Hialeah Gardens are too far from me. I live by North Miami Beach. I did find a place not too far from me that is $60/month, which is more affordable, but not for my budget right now
Thanks for responding!

I rely on video tutorials online because it's expensive to hire an instructor.

I'm about to tread on very thin ice...
Hi there,
I hope you're all doing well.
As a martial arts instructor myself, I kinda couldn't help myself.
This probably isn't the best way to open in a thread called "affordable karate lessons" but... I believe, when last I checked, the courses offered at our academy are actually the highest priced in our local community, the Cutler Bay area - but we're not trying to compete based upon price; we're leading the community based upon value; we're doing way more than teaching your child to block, kick, and punch, I'm proud to say.
We've done a lot to build more value (specifically, what the parents we partner with find valuable for their children) into our courses than we actually price them. In a sense, if you want for your child everything we have to offer, then in fact we have made that affordable.
Despite our higher price, I can in fact GUARANTEE that many parents spend more money a month on their children for things that aren't even good or healthy for them!
Extensive research, testing, training outside of the martial arts industry, and enjoying hours of deep conversations with our partner-parents has led us to a MAJOR (even emotional!) paradigm shift as martial arts instructors; compared to what we're doing now, we had it all wrong! I can now say beyond the shadow of a doubt that we focus upon and deliver a "product" that is of greater value to the kind of sincerely loving and caring parents that we partner with and serve.
The "product?" A happier, safer, self-respecting, and trustworthy child that makes your job as a parent seem like a stress-and-anxiety-free, fun vacation compared to others parents' lives, guaranteed.
There's a good chance anyone reading this might not be in our local community of Cutler Bay or that the instructors in your local area will not have done as much as we have to tailor such powerful courses, so to you I offer this warning:
The instructors you entrust with your children will undoubtedly shape who they become as people and the critical decisions they may make under pressure. Please don't take such a HUGE risk based upon price alone. AT LEAST go meet the instructors, find out what they are about before you let them put a single word of instruction into your child's mind.
I hope you're all doing well.
